Garden City Play Environment - Opening Day - June 2008 from space2place on Vimeo.

Garden City Park is located in Richmond British Columbia. This video captures some of the play experiences at the park’s opening day. The park was design to have a more integrated play experience across the park and the different site features. This short feature attempts to capture a few of the “stories” in the park that day.

This is our first video with our new camera and there are a couple glitches - mostly with some wind noise. However, I think it is not bad for a first attempt.

A good introduction to our approach for the park design.

High Line was constructed in 1930’, in order to put dangerous and unpleasant freight traffic 30 feet above pedestrian sidewalks, 75 years later, pedestrians are put 30 feet above the dangerous and unpleasant traffic conditions, to have a moment away from city’s fast vibe.

Elevated park was designed by landscape architecture studio Corner Field Operations. In New York, where urban structure is very dense, High line plays a very important role in people’s everyday life.

In a relation to urban context High Line is probably a total success, one could walk the user-friendly pavement, rest on a long and comfortable benches, or explore vegetation.

The neo-renaissance villa is situated on the verge of the lake Bled. The area is steep, mostly covered with forest. The scattered remains of the former forest-park – paths and masonry details – unfold the once discovered potential of the site. The main experiential value is hidden in the sequence of a walk through the forest at the back of the villa. From time to time, between the dark verticals of the trees, magnificent views open to the lake, to the island and to the castle, while the forest itself unveils interesting ambiences with significant connotations: a watch hut, water reservoirs and relief flats. The proposal conserves and enhances the existing ambiental qualities by revealing some old structures and adding some new ones, by adding new punctuated planting and enhancing the views by removing some trees. The most appropriate programme, according to the aspirations of the owner, seems to be a sculpture park, which is yet to evolve gradually. It begins with the sculpture at the corner of the ice-cellar behind the villa. The sculpture and the vault of the cellar are reminiscent of the grotto, one of the most important elements of the renaissance and baroque gardens. The path will later lead the visitor into the forest, which, while infested with cultural imprints, still preserves some of the calm monumentality of the primordial wild.
