Last year I posted pictures of Harbour bath in Copenhagen, last month I visited the site and made a few more photos. You can see how the wood is aging and some green carpets emerged I suppose due to safety precautions.

Project year: 2003
Budget: US $787,000
JDS: If you walk across Langebro on a sunny Saturday afternoon in summer, you’ll see a very peculiar sight when looking down at the old industrial area on Islands Brygge. Hundreds of people dressed in swimwear are walking, standing, sunbathing and smiling about as if they were on a sandy beach far from the metropolis. In 2002 the Harbour Bath was opened as part of the Havneparken. In no time it developed into a unique oasis right in the middle of Copenhagen. People instantly loved it. City harbours are usually not associated with fresh swimming water. Old swimming baths at Langebro closed down in 1953 because of poor water quality. Bathing is now without health risks thanks to the improved water quality. With 42 km of wharf in the harbour the city’s revitalization “Blue Plan” is working on making room for houseboats, promenades, water sports, recreation areas and playgrounds in the entire harbour space. Copenhageners now pack towels and swimwear in their briefcases. They might fancy a swim.

Goerlitz Marien Square
The concept for the redesign of the “Marienplatz” (Marien square) and adjacent street spaces was developed with special regard to its unique location between the former fortifications and historical succession of squares within the Old Town. The reorganization of traffic resulted in the development of a generous urban open space that can be distinguished into three zones by function and by means of design. The area around the “Frauenturm” (women’s tower) represents a link into the historic Old Town. The central zone is a place for events and activities, is designed for flexible uses and is kept free of larger structures. The tree canopy to the south rounds off the square and becomes a place of contemplation and relaxation. The water feature as a modern adaptation of the historical moat becomes the focal point and lively centre of the square.

Architecture: Enric Miralles & Benedetta Tagliabue
Landscape Architecture: EDAW
Location: Barcelona, Spain
Completion: 2002
EDAW: Diagonal Mar, a retail and residential complex centered on a public park, completes Barcelona’s urban beachfront revitalization begun in 1989 for the Summer Olympic Games. Working with Robert A.M. Stern Architects and Spanish architect Enric Miralles, EDAW developed a master plan for the entire development.
Providing a gateway to the sea for locals and visitors, Parc Diagonal Mar features play areas, lakes, a waterfall, an outdoor café, a fountain and viewingmounds, all linked by paths that lead to the beach. The park is conceived as an abstract tapestry in plan view, and is enjoyed from above by high-rise residents.
Ecology played a meaningful role in the park’s design. Porous pavements minimize stormwater runoff. The use of native plant materials allows for reduced irrigation and pesticide use. A regional retention pond and sections of shoreline edged with aquatic plants provide first flush cleansing of stormwater, as well as a habitat for indigenous marine and bird species.
