Zollhallen Plaza is new counterpart for the historic customs hall which was restored in 2009. The plaza is a fine example of water sensitive urban design, as it is disconnected from the sewer system. Beautiful planters provide infiltration points, and subsurface gravel trenches with innovative in-built filter medium reduce the hydraulic overload on the sewer system. Indented plaza areas create a surface flood zone. No rain water is fed to the sewer system, instead the groundwater table is recharged.

Most cities with industrial pasts inherit problematic environmental futures. The Steel Yard’s cleanup is a showcase for regenerative design in a tough environment. Within industrial Providence, our project is a public intervention that upends commonly held notions of blighted neighbourhoods and shows the potential for real, actively engaged – not simply ‘adaptive’—re-use.

After closing down the former US Army helicopter airfield Bonames seemed to stay behind as a relic of the cold war like a contaminant in the near-natural floodplains of the river Nidda. The basic idea behind the design is to modify the original airfield and its materiality so gently that the military character of the area melts together with the surrounding nature to a new unity. Simultaneously, the former airfield was opened to the public for recreational outdoor uses.

The mantra throughout the design process was ‘Keep it Simple, Keep it Wild, Keep it Slow, and Keep it Quiet'.
