The utopian modernism that underpinned the plans for the neighbourhood envisaged a metro system, a road network free of crossings, uniform thirteen-story housing blocks coupled with parking garages and extensive green space. In practice, it delivered an unsafe neighbourhood with problems and an unforeseen multi-cultural population. Now re-branded Amsterdam Zuidoost, the neighbourhood has been urged to provide a differentiated housing stock and to improve its management of the public realm.

With its favorable location close to the Bijlmer Arena station, the ArenA soccer stadium, several hotels, bars, shops and restaurants, Hoekenrode square might be the most important city square of Amsterdam Zuidoost.

LANDLAB made a purposely reserved design to avoid any competition with the building’s shapes and to make the transitions between the museum, the plaza and the IJ as smooth as possible ... ... The rear of the museum is set in green to establish its relationship with the Oeverpark and the still to develop district.

The starting point for the design of the winding playstructure, which is positioned on a prominent spot on the balcony, was therefore to strengthen the relation between the shopping area and the Sloterplas. The view on the Sloterplas is kept open and the width of the green zone determined the size of the play structure.
